Nearly every member of the student body has experienced the uncomfortable, awkward conditions of a study hall bell in the Commons. Almost everyone has felt the pain of losing access to the library due to an over-sized study bell. Now, there is a new study space near the art and foregin language rooms that may just solve your problem.
The hangout space is outfitted with couches, chairs, a table, and a few art pieces, all of which were set up near a large, east-facing window, allowing sunlight to soak the space. This was all arranged over the summer for the students to use throughout the school year.
Many students and teachers were initially confused about the use of the new work space. Junior Conor Mackey says, “I just don’t get the point of it.”
Many Mariemont scholars have ignored the space and haven’t considered it as a viable study area.
One member of the student body who regularly uses this new space is junior MJ Griesmer. He says, “I come down here just about every day.”
Griesmer simply signs out of study hall and heads straight to the new area to do his work. Griesmer says, “It’s just a nice change of scenery. You can sit here and work on stuff and enjoy the sunshine.”
Griesmer says his Latin class came down to the hangout space simply for a change of pace to shake up the classroom.
Señora Timmerding says that she sees many students working on their homework and talking in the morning. She says that it’s a great place for her students to practice conversing in the Spanish language without outside noise.
Overall, Timmerding says the new hangout area has provided students with a spot to, “have a meditative time, enjoy the sunshine, and listen to a Spanish language podcast.”
