In most high school settings, some sports receive more attention than others. Whether it be for recent success or the culture surrounding the sport, all fan bases are not created equal.
The 2016 Mariemont volleyball team is not an exception to this phenomenon. The Lady Warriors, after posting an 8-13 record last season, hope to change the recent downward trend of the team’s popularity and performance.
A big change needed for The lady Warriors is their attitude, according to Juniors Kennedy Moi and Maddy Kromer. These players have claimed that the morale of the team is substantially lower than last year due to loss of some senior talent and leadership. Hopefully with attitude change, wins will ensue.
An example of the lack of confidence would be the humorous but fitting quote by Moi after being asked who are some of the better teams in the
CHL. Moi responded: “Wyoming, Taylor… All pretty good compared to us”
Though the team lost key seniors, the ladies feel confident in the experience they have on the varsity team. Junior Kennedy Moi says “Our seniors have lots of experience. They know what it takes to win”.
Another key addition to the team is new assistant, Coach Kelly (unable to find last name, players did not know it). Praised by player Maddy Kromer as an intelligent and straightforward coach who brings college experience to a relatively young Mariemont squad. She also brings a relatable quality to the team being a female coach, says Kromer.
Some players to watch for are: Junior Maddy Kromer, Junior Kennedy Moi, Junior Madeline Hook, Sophomore Grace Penker and Senior Victoria Crabtree.
