History was in the making as long-time track leader Coach Timmers started the first annual “Track Fun Day.”
Rather than have a usual practice, where different parts of the team separate to their own workout, the entire track roster was divided into two groups, which competed in various events. Festivities ranged from a conventional hurdles relay to a Frisbee relay, where the teams competed to see who could toss a Frisbee around the track the fastest. The new track holiday was started to bond the team, as many teammates rarely see each other between the selective workouts.
The coaches relay featured rare performances by Coach Timmers, current record holder in Mariemont track relay history; Mark McEwan, a past Mariemont high jumper; and Coach Dixon, who competed on the Clemson football team when in college.
While the Mariemont track and field team is rooted in the middle of CHL competition, just as much competing goes on within the team, as juniors Johnny Wirthlin and Mike Davis can attest. From day one in practice time trials to the meet invitationals, the two have been neck-and-neck in the 100 meter dash.
In an often forgotten aspect of the track and field team, the shot-put and discus throw programs are being continued by foreign exchange student Christian Stenild and sophomores Karyn Georgilis and Lindsey Serraino. With the training pits tucked inconspicuously in the upper field, MHS students often forget about the program.
A training pit that the school lacks entirely, however, is a pole vault pit. Juniors Timmy Sattegren, Jordan Walter, Stephanie Allen, and Emmie Stehling must drive over to Cincinnati Country Day School on select days the pit is not being used. This limitation has not inhibited the success of many of the athletes; recently, Walter placed first and Stehling second in the pole vault in a multi-team invitational.
The long-distance portion of the track team boasts nearly the whole roster of the fall season’s cross-country team, whom claimed the division title this year. Team captains Reed Gerberick and Tim Kuck lead the group, who hope to lift Mariemont into the CHL title battle, as well as proceeding well into the district meet.
