Over the past year, we’ve witnessed and experienced the turmoils that came with 2020. Looking back on the year, we will remember what we went through, who we went through it with, and who we became because of it. But what we– through these times– have failed to recognize is who we are and who we’ll always be. To stay grounded in these turbulent times, I thought it would be interesting to see what is at the core of Mariemont students.

I conducted a survey during Advisory Bell to all students with the statement, “I am…”. I asked students to respond with whatever they felt was the best response, and about 17% said something about being an athlete while about 12% said something about being grateful.

The interesting thing is that being grateful and being an athlete are two core traits that can’t be taken away– even in 2020. What we were, what we are, and what we will be can’t be dictated by these times. I thought I’d share a few of the responses that stood out:

Finn Reber: “I am grateful for my friends, family, and school.”

Colin Mikesell: “I am a musician.”

Jackson Hacias: “I am textured.”

Elizabeth Lannello: “I am grateful to be a volleyball player, runner, and student.”

Brynna O’Brien: “I am tenacious.”

Luke Henize: “I am determined to be my best.”

Hutton Furbay: “I am worth it.”

Bella Mason: “I am inspired.”

Charlie Perkins: “I am my own, unique self.”

Hailey Zobrist: “I am a minute older than McKenzie.” (she really had to rub it in?)
