During Homecoming week, three Mariemont graduates were chosen to be be honored in the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame for their outstanding lives and careers; one of which was Ted Beattie. Beattie graduated from Mariemont High School in 1963 where he played golf and was a part of a team that won four league championships. He attended the Ohio State University on a golf scholarship where he majored in Journalism. Beattie returned to Ohio State to get his master’s degree in Public Relations.
He started out as a marketing manager at the Cincinnati Zoo and has held numerous leadership roles at the Brookfield Zoo (Chicago), Knoxville Zoological Gardens, and Forth Worth Zoo. He became the CEO of the Shedd Aquarium, one of the world’s most prestigious aquariums, back in 1994 and retired from his position earlier this year. I had a chance to interview Beattie and ask him about different aspects of his career and his time at Mariemont.
