Easter comes on a Sunday every year in April or March. Every family who celebrates Easter prepares and celebrates it differently, some people think Easter may just be a United States holiday, but in reality, the world celebrates it also.
Five interesting world traditions are:
1. Bermuda- The people make home-made kites, eat codfish cakes, hot cross buns, and celebrate. “The tradition is said to have begun when a local teacher from the British Army had difficulty explaining Christ’s ascension to Heaven to his Sunday school class. He made a kite, traditionally shaped like a cross, to illustrate the Ascension,” (Huffpost).
2. Norway- The families read mystery books, watch detective TV shows, and go to the mountains for the weekend and the holidays. “Norwegians have an interesting tradition for the season known for “Easter-Crime” or Paaskekrim,” (Huffpost).
3. Europe- Mostly northwestern part, make huge fires to celebrate around while eating snacks, drinking gin and lager, and partying till the sun rises. This tradition comes from a Saxon tale of Easter is a time when spring comes out and the fire chases the darkness of winter away.
4. Sweden- They have eggs, herring, Janasson’s Temptation, (potato, onion, pickled sardines baked in cream). Also the children wear old and discarded clothes, to look like witches.
5. Haiti- They play “rara” music with bamboo trumpets, maracas, drums, and coffee cans. They Also they offer goat heads and sacrifices to the spirits they believe in. They do this because it is a Catholic and voodoo tradition.
Mariemont Traditions:
Senior Haley Fallon- “I have gone to church every Easter since I was born, the tradition has been from family to family with my parents to my grandparents going to church every Easter. There is an egg hunt and palm leaves are scattered around the church. I enjoy doing this with my family every year and hope to continue it like my parents did.”
Junior- Shelby Krimmer- “I go to church every Easter. Also I hide eggs for my brother for him to find with candy and gifts in them. After my parents give us gifts in a basket that is usually chocolate. Also my family makes dinner with ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green beans. It’s a exciting time and I hope to continue it when I grow up.”
Sophomore Cody Miller- “I go to my Grandma’s every Easter. The reason it is special is because it has been going on since I was born. Also we hide eggs, and baskets, and decorate eggs with crazy designs. Once we are all done we sit down to enjoy a feast.”
Freshman Ally Croll- “We always paint Easter eggs. We each have a little tray to make six or so eggs and we keep them up all Easter. Then my parents hide plastic Easter eggs with change and candy in them. It is a tradition because I wake up every Easter and I know what is going to happen every hour.”
