Mariemont High School takes pride in its mascot, the warrior. The image of a man with a feathered headdress is plastered everywhere from bumper stickers to t-shirts to the walls of the cafeteria. Students have long participated in “warrior” rituals such as the football pow-wow and reading the Warpath. However, students at MHS seem to have even adopted a fashion trend from the mascot — feathers in their hair.

The new style first appeared at MHS sometime last spring, as Mariemont students were introduced to them by students from other schools.

“My friend Alexis from Indian Hill said a bunch of people had them at her school,” says senior Grace Gardner. “I went with her to get hers put in, and I decided I wanted one.”

“I like them because they’re something different,” says junior Samantha Goheen. “I got mine because no one else had them, and I thought they looked cute.”

The hair-feathers are long and thin, similar to those used in fishing lures. They are attached to the desired part of the hair at the root. The feathers will stay in anywhere from one to two months according to wearers.

“Getting the feathers put in your hair is popular because it is really cheap but cute,” says Goheen. “It’s also nice that if you don’t want them anymore they’re easy to take out, unlike if you were to dye your hair.”

“Boho style is in right now, and the feathers are very boho-esque,” states Gardner. “Plus, at Mariemont trends always blow up and spread like wildfire; like leggings as pants, uggs, etc.”
