A variety of clubs exist at Mariemont, but fans of film may soon be able to find their niche with the possibility of a new Film Club. Emma Welch, junior, came up with the idea for a movie-based club, and so far over forty students have signed their names up.

Welch says a friend who works with her at Mariemont Theater was a president of Turpin’s film club, and she decided it was something she would like to bring to students at Mariemont. “It’s also a leadership experience that won’t hurt when I apply for college,” Welch adds.

If Film Club comes to fruition, the club will meet once a week for about an hour, with forty-five minutes dedicated to a movie. She also says that club members will be encouraged to suggest movies for the club to watch.  The group will discuss the movies they watch. Welch hopes that the club will be able to have a monthly outing to a movie.

Welch notes that the club won’t be that different from the similar Book Club. “It would be like Book Club and how they have breakfast… only with movies and candy.”

In order to form a club, Welch says about fifteen to twenty people need to sign up. So far, interest has yielded that many students and more.

Students have various reasons for wanting to join the club. Aaron Routt, sophomore, says he signed up for Film Club “because blockbuster movies suck and have no meaning.” People signing up for this reason will surely be satisfied, as Welch is hoping to expose members to movies no one has probably even heard of.

Similarly, junior Peter Laug explains that he joined because he enjoys watching movies, and is interesting in seeing movies he’s never heard of before. “I joined to expand my horizons with movies,” he says.

Not everyone has a solid reason for joining this potential club. and are interested in it simply because they think it’ll be fun. “I joined because I like movies and candy,” admits Kelly Kaufmann, junior.

While Welch awaits a final verdict on Film Club, she says that both Mrs. Neumann and Mrs. Lowery are interested in hosting the club for their meetings. With a lengthy list of interested students, teacher backup, and a game plan for the club, all they need now is a confirmation from Dr. Renner.
