Deadlines are approaching. Seniors are finishing up applications, putting the final touches on their resumes and essays. They panic and worry, hoping that they’ve navigated this terrifying process correctly. Last week, the Warpath gave MHS students insight into this crazy world of college-bound seniors. Now, College Spotlight is back to delve into the lives of three more Mariemont 12th graders.

KARYN GEORGILIS
Where are you applying?
Ohio State, DAAP at UC, New York University, Carnegie Mellon, Rhode Island School of Design. I might throw some more in.

What drew you to those schools?
I was looking for somewhere with a good liberal arts program, especially in science. And a good art program.

What’s your top choice and why?
Carnegie Mellon (even though I realize it’s a big stretch) because their whole deal is science and art. The first presentation slide at their information session had, “Science, Art.” They really stress mixing them.

Where are you in the process?
I have applied to a couple of the schools, and I’m going to wait for responses from the first few before doing more. Because I’m lazy. And I want to save on application fees.

What is it like going to college for art? How has that affected the process?
It’s made the process a lot more work than I anticipated. Going to school for art is really competitive and involved. Each college wants a portfolio and each has specific portfolio elements they require.

If you could do something over again, what would it be? Any regrets?
I regret thinking grades didn’t matter freshman and sophomore year. I was a little too lax back then.

Any tips for underclassmen applying next year?
You can never start too early. And you should start early. And don’t feel stupid about obsessing over the college process. It helps you in the end. It helped me.

NATE WAGNER
Where are you applying?
University of Kentucky, East Carolina University, Miami and Xavier. Just these so far.

What drew you to those schools?
How pretty their campus was and the quality of their academics.

What’s your top choice and why?
East Carolina University because their campus is beautiful and by the beach. They have what I want academics-wise and they’re recruiting me heavily.

Where are you in the process?
I have applied to most of my schools and have already been accepted into the University of Kentucky.

What is it like going to college for swimming? How has that affected the process?
It’s made it more stressful but also easier. More stressful because talking to coaches for the first time is a little scary because you want to make yourself look as good as possible. Easier because colleges came to me and I had options.

What has been the best part of the college process? The worst?
Best: The recruiting trips because the colleges pay for everything and you get to spend the weekend on the campus with students. And the fact that East Carolina University flew me down for my trip.
Worst: the ACT/SAT

Any tips for underclassmen applying next year?
Live it up while it lasts because high school goes by fast.

MACKENZIE SHELLEY
Where are you applying?
Ohio State, University of Michigan, Virginia Tech, Washington University, Northwestern. Maybe a few more.

What drew you to those schools?
The quality of their engineering programs.

Where are you in the process?
I have applied to three schools and will probably submit the rest of my applications in the next few weeks.

What is it like applying with a perfect ACT score? How has that affected the process?
It’s made me feel more secure about my chances of getting in, but overall it hasn’t had a huge effect on the process.

What has been the best part of the college process? The worst?
Best: Visiting schools.
Worst: Trying to complete applications while dealing with school and sports.

What are you looking to study?
Mechanical engineering and maybe computer science.

Any tips for underclassmen applying next year?
Don’t procrastinate—finish as much during the summer as possible.
