A sarcastic tongue and quick wit sit across from me in a living room as I begin to take notes. I realize it immediately – although I’ve always known Steve Hassey, there’s something different.

He’s a freshman, so naturally I ask him about his thoughts on being the low man on the totem pole.

“It’s pretty crazy, it’s a huge transition from the j-high; but with my swag? I got this,” Steve says with a laugh. It’s hard not to understand why this freshman has captured the attention of so many students and why he seems so different: he’s funny.

As a soccer player, cross country/track runner, and member of the strings ensemble, Steve Hassey has charmed freshman and upperclassmen alike.

“It’s easy to see why people like me,” he says with a laugh, “I’m cool like ice and hot like fiyah. Also, I’m pretty tall. Write that I’m 5’8″.”

He’s 5’5”.

Steve has so far enjoyed his high school experience. He says he has enjoyed getting to know a lot of the older kids, but he also enjoys spending time with his family.

“My family’s pretty close,” he says.  “Sometimes my oldest sister Meg pays me to run around the house barefoot in the snow, and I went to the Lil Wayne Concert with my mom.”

Steve planned on following some of the steps of his other older sister, senior Kate Hassey, by attempting to join the mock trial team.

“I went to one meeting, and I was late. I quit,” says Steve.

One of the youngest Hassey’s favorite accomplishments is in his success in stock club.

“I’m in stock club and I’ve made two dollars. Watch out Warren Buffet,” says Steve with a laugh.

Although he talks about the majority of his high school in a funny tone, when it comes to Duke basketball he is deadly serious.

“I love Duke,” says Steve, “The best night of my life was probably when Austin Rivers hit a three-pointer to beat UNC. The game was at UNC so it was insane.”
