When a person thinks of high school, they reflect on football, basketball, the marching band, and all the exciting classes they took. Others, however, will look back at their days at Mariemont and dream of one thing: chorus.
For the students in chorus, it is a special part of their high school careers as well as a large time commitment.
“Chorus is really nice because I personally like to sing and that’s what I want to do for a future career,” says senior Kirstyn Hippe.
“I really like the fact that we get to sing, and we sing every day in chorus,” says junior Mason Berger. Choral director Liz McGahey agrees that they practice as much as possible.
In addition to regular Chorus class, there’s an honors singing group called the Chamber Choir for which students must try out.
“I really like singing with the Chamber Choir because the music is relatively difficult, and it sounds beautiful when every singer blends,” says senior member Ryan Fine.
Members of chorus are given the opportunity to go on trips and sing at events.
“We went caroling at the Pendleton Art Center and at the Mariemont tree lighting,” says Fine. Chorus also took a trip to New York City last year, which, according to the singers, was their greatest bonding experience.
“They all come together and no matter what background they are from or what group of friends they hang out with, we all get together and we create this really cool thing that’s bigger than just ourselves, and that’s what makes it really fun,” states McGahey.
McGahey enjoys teaching chorus because her group is so energetic and outgoing. McGahey also explains that different people are in chorus each year, which makes each group special and unique.
“Every year it’s a different choir, it’s a different group of kids, it’s a different sound, and it’s different personalities,” says McGahey. “The kids make it such a unique experience.”
“Chorus is always something I look forward to throughout the school year,” says Fine, who says that he will look back on his years as a Warrior and remember what it felt like to be a member of this one-of-a-kind group.
