As per request from our most avid Warpath reader, Andy Gorman, here are five basic fashion tips for guys.
Develop A Color Scheme: Color is the foundation of any outfit and is often an indication of formality. For example, one always wears black at a funeral, but people attending a rave might choose to wear something more vibrant. For students, it’s difficult to go wrong with black, white or grey. They’re clean and versatile. After that, experiment with darker shades of color, like navy blue, brown, dark green, dark red, etc. Brighter colors are more difficult to pair with each other, but if done correctly look awesome. Also, solid colors and patterns always look cleaner than logos and graphics.
Know Your Size: One basic way to make yourself look more put together is to make sure your clothing fits proportionally. A shirt that’s too big might make your head look small, but a shirt that’s too tight makes your arms look too long. Different brands have different size cuts, so in addition to experimenting with sizes, experiment with stores and brands. The same thing goes for jeans and pants. If you’re skinnier, tighter jeans will be more flattering that baggy jeans, but if you’re more built, slim fit or wider cut jeans will be a better choice. Levis has great cuts, like 501 (straight), 514 (slim), 511 (skinny), and 510(crazy skinny). Knowing your size and body type will help you look your best.
Layer: Though more practical in the colder months, layering with method and intention creates a sophisticated outfit. You should start with a base layer, like an undershirt or t-shirt, and then build out with button ups, including plaid and flannel, then onto sweaters, cardigans, and hoodies, and ending with a jacket. This takes the most experimentation, because it requires you to balance color, function, and style.
Shoes: Shoes, like color, are easiest to pull off if kept plain and simple. A general rule is to always match your shoes with your belt, black to black, brown to brown, and make sure the formality of the outfit is consistent. Dress shoes might look awkward paired with a hoodie, and sneakers can ruin a cleaner cut outfit. For example, boat shoes and desert boot styles are slightly nicer than sneakers and extremely versatile. Try to find one pair that works well in any situation.
Appropriateness: As George Orwell said, “Break any of these rules sooner than say (or wear) anything outright barbarous.” Know your limitations. It is difficult for high school students to pull off wearing a vest or a blazer without looking awkward. A pair blue jeans and a white t-shirt that are clean and fit well will always look better than a poorly fitting button up, no matter how many layers you throw on. Just because the item exists and looks good on rock stars and models doesn’t mean it will look good on us. Try on and experiment with everything, but don’t force anything. If you’re really at a loss, ask a girl’s opinion. They’re who most of us are dressing for anyway, so take what they say to heart.
