DANIEL SIMONS
As the leaves began to sprout , flowers begin to bloom and the weather becomes feasible to withstand, the baseball team began to workout towards their first games of the season on their baseball trip. This year, the baseball team would be going to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a trip previously endured two years ago, where it did not go over so well. This year, however, was a different story. Here is a recap of what happened in Myrtle Beach, Spring Break 2014.
Arrival: The team arrives at the Myrtlewood Villas, a set of condos with many nice rooms. We get there at 4:30pm, and check-in. According to senior Danny Renner, his favorite part of the trip was the king-sized bed provided by the Villas. But wait, there is a problem. My room with David Cowart, Kane Coates and Walker Van Hook has been split up because the hotel clerk decided that our room was not clean enough for living for a few days, so we were dispersed among our fellow teammates.
At 6:30pm, tensions are running high as we participated in some sub par infield and not great batting practice. The coaches are not happy with the way we took our infield. Top that off with March Madness in the back of my mind all practice long, only to be greeted by Coach Hanley with the terrible news that Michigan had lost to Kentucky on a late 3-pointer. Salvation had overcome me when I was told I would be starting the first game the next day.Games 1 and 2: Finally, the games began at the beautiful Ripken Experience. Senior outfielder Brendan Woodruff agreed, saying the Ripken Experience “was one hell of an experience.” Senior catcher Patrick Renner concurred with Woodruff, saying “the Ripken Experience was a pretty swell complex.” We take the the field at the Polo Grounds, with me at the helm. It felt so good
to be out there, and it showed. I might’ve given up a home run to the first batter, and taken a line drive right in the leg, but I was dealing after that.
My curveball was working for me and it gave me five of my six strikeouts. The team then brought the bats, as we ended up scoring 14 runs and routing Middlesboro, KY by a score of 14-4, with me picking up the win. This game was also a favorite of senior P. Renner because he “stole home and tripled.”
We played a second game that day, against Paducah Tilghman, KY. Hayden Seeger was on the mound, but the game was not favorable for us and it showed in the score- 13-3.
Games 3 and 4: Our next game was against another team from Kentucky, Cordia High School. We cruised to a win behind Kane Coates’ complete game, 15-1. The bats were out in the evening, so was the pitching. Our final game was against ANOTHER team from Kentucky, Lawrenceburg High School. They were probably our biggest competition going into the game and would prove to be our toughest opponent. The score did not show that.
Danny Renner was on the mound and really delivered. He concurred with me, saying, “The last game was best because I struck out 3 batters over 7 innings.” Renner threw a complete game, only giving up one run. The Warrior bats put up eight runs on the scoreboard, beating one of the best teams at the complex. The whole trip proved to be a successful one, as we won 3 out of the 4 games we played, something that Patrick Renner was keen to point out. “My favorite part was the winning. Duh,” says Renner.
