The Super Bowl: the biggest NFL game of the season. Every year, over 100 million people turn on their TVs and tune in to watch two teams compete for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Recently, the Super Bowl hasn’t been just about football. These people aren’t just watching for the game… They tune in for the halftime show, and most of all, the commercials.
It costs up to $30 million dollars for just a 30-second ad space during the Super Bowl. Because of this expense, companies spend a lot of time making them memorable for viewers at home.
There were quite a few memorable commercials during Super Bowl 50. A portion of the 111.9 million people who tuned in to watch came from Mariemont High School, so the Warpath asked them for some of their favorite commercials.
Doritos Ultrasound Commercial:
While eating some Doritos during his wife’s ultrasound, a husband realizes his newborn baby also loves Doritos as the baby moves toward the chip in the ultrasound. The mother of the baby angrily
throws the chip across the room, which leads to a surprise birth. “That was very very funny,” says senior Aurora Anderson. “It’s similar to other commercials, but it definitely has some unexpected turns.”
Hyundai’s First Date Commercial (featuring Kevin Hart):
In this commercial, Kevin Hart, a famous comedian, lends his brand new Hyundai Genesis-equipped with a new tracking device-to his daughter’s date so that they can be tracked throughout the night. He then proceeds to follow them around all night, causing his daughter’s date to end the night early. Surprisingly, it gave Kevin Hart a chance to be intimidating for once. “It was just overall very funny,” says senior William Bragg. “Very creative.”
Mountain Dew’s Puppy Monkey Baby Commercial:
This strange commercial begins with three guys sitting on a couch… and then a creature–baby legs, a monkey body and a pug’s head–barges in holding a bucket of Mountain Dew Quickstart. The creature begins to repeat the phrase “Puppy-Monkey-Baby” in a strange, almost scary voice as the three men sit there in awe. After the men crack open their Mountain Dews, a beat starts going and they get up and begin to dance. “It was very weird,” says sophomore Austin Croswait. “It was kind of funny but really just kind of got my attention.”
Skittles Commercial (featuring Steven Tyler):
In this commercial, Steven Tyler comes face-to-face with his own face made entirely of Skittles. Steven Tyler then challenges the strange face to sing-off to the song “Dream On.” The face attempts to do so, which causes his face to explode and the Skittles to go everywhere around the room. “It was very Steven Tyler-esque,” says junior Joe Veeneman.
However, even though many people enjoyed the commercials this year, others had differing opinions.
“There were no highlights,” says senior Brennan Crowley. “It was definitely a weak crop of commercials this year.”
