Peyton Manning, Calvin Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Jane Douthit. All faces of their organization, all legends, all have decided to call it quits after this year.
In their respective careers, Manning has thrown for 71,940 yards, Johnson has 11,619 yards receiving, Bryant has scored 33,643 points, and Douthit has unofficially written over 80,000 tardies.
For 37 years, she hasn’t gotten much attention or even asked for any. But now it’s time for a change… Douthit deserves some recognition for her time at Mariemont.
Douthit has had a long career in the Mariemont school district to say the least. She originally started working at the Board of Education in 1979, but shifted over to the high school in 1994 and has worked here ever since.
“It’s bittersweet,” say Douthit. “I’m really going to miss the faculty and the students, but I’m excited to just relax and enjoy retirement.”
As 37 years have passed, Douthit’s job has definitely changed. “There were no computers when I started. We used typewriters instead… now it’s all about technology” she says.
Others, however, have a different recollection of what it was like when she first started working in the district.
“The parking lots were mostly the same but there were horses instead of cars” says Athletic Director Tom Nerl.
A large part of her job consists of writing tardies for late MHS students, so naturally, Douthit has many entertaining stories of her various interactions with students.
“One time some student brought me coffee in an attempt to bribe me,” she says. She did not make it clear whether the bribes were successful or not.
Because she’s the first person people see when they walk into school, many students have some good and some not so good memories of Mrs. Douthit.
“She writes me about 3 tardies per week” says senior John Fening. “I’ve never seen someone hold a pen like she does.”
After 37 years spent perfecting her craft, who could disagree?
Manning, Johnson, and Kobe decided to hang up their Nikes after many seasons as the face of their franchise. More importantly, it’s time for Douthit to hang up her all white New Balances after her illustrious career as a Mariemont Warrior.
“Douthit out.”
