Was a vote for Trump really a vote for Trump, or was it just a vote against Hillary?
CNN’s interactive map which predicts what presidential candidate each state will be voting for, projected Hillary to defeat Trump by 64 points. As we all know, in the end, Trump came out on top defeating Hillary by 108 electoral college votes.
The question among Americans is how did Trump pull this off ?
Josh McClorey, varsity sophomore soccer player, explains he “heard somebody say that the only people that voted for Trump were uneducated white people, which I found funny.” McClorey also says,” I believe Trump will do great things for this country.”
Stephanie Frey, varsity sophomore cheerleader, says, “There have been and still are a lot of protests about Trump being president, which is annoying because no matter what protestors say or do Trump is going to be the president.” Frey goes on to say, “Everybody is freaking out thinking that Trump is going to make all these big dramatic changes, but he has to go through congress before any changes are made so it’s not 100% all Trump.”
Hannah Coates, sophomore, says, “Both candidates are bad, but Hillary is a fake, liar who would run the US into the ground, and so I am left with hoping that Trump keeps his word and makes America great again.” Coates also claims, “the whole wall thing isn’t going to happen. There is no way Trump will be able to build a wall from one side of Mexico to the other, its just not going to happen.”
According to New York Times, their prediction on November 8, 2016 claimed that Hillary had an 85% chance of winning the election. They state that, “a victory by Mr. Trump remains possible: Mrs. Clinton’s chance of losing is about the same as the probability that an N.F.L. kicker misses a 37-yard field goal.”
Senior varsity soccer player, Ben Phelan, said that, “I believe that some people weren’t voting for Trump, they were just voting against Hillary.” Phelan also said, “Although some see Hillary as a bad person, I think she would’ve made just as good a president as Trump.”
My brother, freshman Owen Holliday, shared his thoughts saying, “I really do not care whatsoever about politics. All I know about Hillary Clinton’s husband is Bill Clinton, and he was president. As for Trump, I just know he’s really rich.”
Junior, Emery Shelley, says she supported Hillary in this election. She said, “I agree with every single one of her policies and she has worked very hard for our country her whole life and deserves recognition. I also think Donald Trump is a horrible person.” Shelley expressed her feelings about Trump’s policies. “I think they’re all unrealistic. He is not going to be able to deport immigrants and I don’t think he should close the borders, just make better facilities and have better security,” she said.
Ryan Scarborough, swimmer at MHS, is also a Hillary supporter and told me, “I like Hillary because she’s not a racist sexist like Trump.” She also said, ” I think how well Trump does depends upon whether or not the Supreme Court supports him or not.”
Although Americans disagree about who is best, most people believe that we, as a country, have to come together and support Trump and his decisions “in order to Make America Great Again”, Scarborough says.
Only time will tell…
