Homecoming is right around the corner and it’s all the students seem to be talking about, everyone except for one class. The Juniors. As of this writing, 73 members of the class of 2012 will not be attending homecoming this year.
Maddie Reed is one of the few juniors planning to attend Homecoming this year.
“I decided to go this year for a lot of reasons but I like getting dressed up and taking pictures. The dance itself isn’t that great,” she says.
Ian Mellon provides a different reason. He says he has attended homecoming in the past and just didn’t have that much fun.
He says “I have been to homecoming once before, but like almost everyone else, my group and I left within twenty minutes because they refused to turn the lights off that year.”
Mellon refers to the 2008 homecoming dance where restrictions on the lighting were enforced. Many who attended that night left within the first half hour.
Mellon continues, “Aside from the lighting problem which has been fixed, I never went back because I never liked the music they played at any of the dances.”
When asked about why he thinks the deficit in juniors is occurring, Mellon says,
“I assume it is not for the same reasons I don’t want to go. They either have better plans, or they enjoy not doing anything on the weekends. But then again, maybe it’s just because the newest Halo game came out two weeks ago.”
Junior Cole DeCamp has attended homecoming every year so far but is not attending this year. He has different reasons. DeCamp says,
“I didn’t really feel like asking anyone and didn’t want to pay the money.”
Homecoming ticket prices are 10 dollars per student. After ticket prices comes flowers, dinner, and clothing expenses to consider. Is this a sign for a dance to come?
Reed states, “I think it could happen with Snowball easily, but I don’t think it will happen with prom!”
Cole DeCamp confirms saying, “I’m definitely going to go to prom. It’s like homecoming on steroids”
