The swift swing of the golf club thinly slicing through the air finished off with a loud ping of metal. That noise is what attracts many to the game of golf. This year at Mariemont, we have a new JV golf coach. His name is Dustin Treftz.

Treftz has been in the Mariemont community for a while now. He went to Mariemont High School back in the 90s, and now works as the head of maintenance.

Treftz says he fell in love with the game at a young age, beginning at four or five years old. He experienced great success on the High School golf team when he was a student, making it to State competition two years in a row.

Now he is trying to bring that success back to this year’s golf team, which has had so many talented players over the years.

It’s his first time being the coach, and Treftz says, “The job’s had more off-the-course things to do than I expected. Things like scheduling matches and getting tee times.”

This year, the team has a winning record thus far, and the players have told Treftz that the coaching has been the difference. He agrees.

Treftz has witnessed some fun moments so far as a first-year coach, like when AJ Walter crushed a tee shot right as a crack of thunder struck, canceling the match. Treftz “Won’t mention AJ’s other tee shots.”

He says, “sometimes I have to keep my eye on Will Kemper and Miller Steele–and remember to take the key out of the golf cart.”

Overall, Treftz’s favorite thing about coaching this year “has been getting to know the players,” and “how well everyone on the team gets along.”

In terms of future success, he believes it is bright, saying, “There are some underclassmen who, if they continue to work on their games, can become really good golfers.”
