Friday Signing Day: A Bright Future Ahead

BY KATE OVERBEY

At 2:30 on Friday, May 3rd in the Main Gym of Mariemont High School, 6 seniors lined up to sign their futures to their prospective colleges. Surrounded by family, friends, and classmates, each senior signed, usually, a blank piece of paper in celebration. A blank piece a paper is only a symbol for the verbal commitment already given to the coach of a school.

A signing for athletes planning on playing collegiate sports is one of the most exciting endeavors. On Friday afternoon, Seniors Braden Bortz, Charlie Cowart, Josh McClory, Lainey Newman, Wally Renie, and Yaitova Spiegel all celebrated their commitment.

When the time came, each of these seniors’ families watched and classmates cheered from the bleachers as the seniors signed. Though many committed several months ago, it was still an exciting moment.

One such of these athletes is Lainey Newman. Newman committed to swim at Denison back in December of 2018 but waited to have her school signing until the spring.

The athletes Braden Bortz, Wally Renie, and Josh McClorey, all are attending DePauw University next year. Renie will be playing football, while McClory and Bortz will be continuing their lacrosse careers.

Charlie Cowart has accepted an offer from the Air Force Academy for lacrosse.

After making her final decision on Tuesday, Yaitova Spiegel has committed to play tennis at North Central College.

Congratulations to these Class of 2019 athletes and their commitments.
