Duke’s “Cameron Crazies” are some of college basketball’s best fans, similarly Mariemont’s “Kusel Krazies” are quickly making a name for themselves in the community of Mariemont, according to senior Drew Serraino. He goes on to say the Mariemont Football team has had one of their best seasons in a while, and so has the student section.
“Our student section has been a lot better than recent years. The amount of people at games is shocking, it’s the most people we’ve ever had,” says Serraino.
There have been recent additions to the student section this year along with many themes. One of the biggest additions has definitely been Biscuit the Whale. The Whale resides with multiple students but its origins came from somewhere else. Sophomore, Jacob Crabtree is the reason for The Whale.
“I asked Skyler Barton to homecoming with a sign that said ‘Whale you go to homecoming with me’ and I also had that whale and when she said yes I tossed it in the crowd,” says Crabtree.
Big supporter of the student section Hester Sullivan recently created shirts with “Kusel Krazies” on the front and “Send the Whale!” on the back. The back also including a picture of a whale.
“I made them because a few of the kids asked me to! As the Boosters spirit wear person I want to create stuff for the students. You guys have an idea for a shirt — I want to make it happen. It’s about making memories,” states Sullivan.
Sullivan loves how the student section can excite the players so much and also admits she gets excited when she hears the cheers.
“In Cameron (and other college venues I’m sure) they talk about the students’ being the ‘6th man’ (12th man in football) — that’s what our student section has been this year — the extra ‘man’ our edge. You guys rock!” exclaims Sullivan.
One leader of this lively student section is senior Julia Whittlesey. Whittlesey has been known to be a high energy fan throughout the game.
“I definitely feel responsible to get everyone loud and excited because I’m all about doing whatever it takes to be the best student section in the CHL and cheer the football boys onto victory,” says Whittlesey.
She has one message to the fans and that is, “Stay loud the entire game and be as crazy as possible because you have no idea how much it means to the players.”
Hopefully one day Mariemont High School’s student section will be known as well as the “Cameron Crazies” but right now everyone is content with being the “Kusel Krazies.”
