Whether it’s the dress, the date or the limo ride, girls seem to want this year’s Prom night to reinvent the wheel. However, this craziness is not universal:
“Boys don’t really care. Prom isn’t as important to boys. We don’t bother with all the makeup and hair stuff. The hair is the same as every other day,” says Wil Dietz, conveying widespread boy-apathy concerning prom.
According to many Mariemont men, some need help figuring out what to do to ask their date, and in a lot of cases, girls seem to be spearheading the asking process from behind the scenes.
“I totally helped Michael (Weston) and Bryan (Routt). I am the prom wizard. They were open to ideas and thought a girl could probably think up something out of a romance novel better than they could. I had lots of ideas for other people too, but no one else needed my help,” Georgilis says.
While girls seem to be flying off their rockers, boys are contrastingly chilled out about the evening. Especially when it comes to what to wear.
“The tux is not as big a deal as the dress. It’s just like every other piece of clothing to men–not a big deal,” Dietz says.
“I got my dress weeks ago,” says senior Olivia Saulnier. “I was really excited about it.”
There is also a Facebook group to make sure no two girls have the same dress.
“I think the group is very helpful. It makes it awkward when two people wear the same dress, and this is a smart way to avoid it,” says Saulnier.
“I think prom is more important to girls because it is the closest any of us get to a wedding–which is a girl’s dream. Also, we get to feel like a celebrity. I feel like I am about to go on a red carpet while I’m getting ready for prom,” says Georgilis.
Saulnier agrees, saying, “Girls all love prom. From the moment last year’s was over, I was already looking forward to this year. It’s just such an experience and I just think girls have more feelings about the night in general. Whether they’re realistic or not.”
